Workshop: Steeplands - Are we managing the risks?

Date:
Wed, 14/03/2012 - 08:30 - 17:00
Location:
Gisborne
This workshop follows in the footsteps on a highly successful event held in Wellington in 2011 looking at indicators of Plantation Forest Sustainability.
In recent times the repeated intense storm events and associated landslides and mass movement in both forested and un-forested lands has brought into sharp focus the risks and public concerns associated with these events.
This workshop aims to bring together a cross section of expertise to look at what are the root causes of such events, what we can expect in the future, what is currently known and done to manage these vulnerable lands and what needs to be done in the future particularly with a focus on the key research questions that need to be answered if these lands are to continue to be managed as commercial and productive forests.
Who are we?
Future Forests Research (FFR) was established in late 2007 as a partnership between the New Zealand Forest growing Industry and New Zealand’s primary forest research organisation, Scion and other research providers.
FFR funds and disseminates forestry research for the benefit of the wider New Zealand Forestry sector. This partnership brings a strong focus to research and development to improve the international competitiveness of New Zealand forestry, the country’s third largest export earner.

Agenda and Workshop Objectives.
  1. Identify gaps in our current knowledge and research programmes in landslides and erosion hazards, and the role of forestry in managing risks from these hazards.
  2. Prioritise future research in these areas
Note: Workshop to exclude social forestry and sustainability issues.
